Netflix has revealed plans to bring the animated feature film "Escape from Hat" to life, with Mark Osborne at the helm as director. Osborne, who has received two Academy Award nominations for his work on "Kung Fu Panda" and "The Little Prince," will collaborate with screenwriter Adam Kline, known for "Artemis Fowl" and "The Clockwork War." The production is set to begin in New York this month, as announced on November 16, 2018, from Hollywood, California.

This project expands Netflix's collection of original animated content created for global family audiences. Jinko Gotoh will join as producer, reuniting with Osborne after their successful partnership on "The Little Prince." Gotoh also serves as producer for Netflix's upcoming 2019 animated film "Klaus," directed by Sergio Pablos. The script draws from Kline's middle-grade novel of the same title, scheduled for publication by HarperCollins in winter 2020, with both Kline and Osborne contributing to the screenplay.

The narrative explores ancient magical mysteries through a fairy tale lens. When a magic rabbit—traditionally considered good in contrast to unlucky black cats—finds itself trapped in a perilous shadowy dimension, the story unfolds. This desperate protagonist gathers an unlikely group of companions to embark on a seemingly impossible mission: breaking free from within a magician's hat to reunite with the human boy who holds his heart.

Melissa Cobb, Netflix's Vice President of Kids & Family, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: "This tale of friendship and magic reflects my feelings about reconnecting with Mark at Netflix after a decade apart. Global audiences will be captivated by our fantastical story of a magic trick gone wrong, discovering an epic imaginative universe where good battles evil."

Osborne shared his excitement about Netflix's innovative approach: "Netflix is revolutionizing animated features through inventive methods, including giving filmmakers rare chances to realize their passion projects. I'm delighted that this film has become one of those opportunities."

Gotoh added her perspective on the creative process: "Those in creative fields are truly fortunate. I'm excited to work again with Mark, Adam, Melissa, and everyone at Netflix."

Kline commented on the screenplay's essence: "Original screenplays require a touch of magic. This one delivers it throughout virtually every scene."

The film is anticipated to premiere in 2022.

Osborne's recent directorial work includes the groundbreaking animated adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's timeless masterpiece "The Little Prince." Combining stop-motion and CGI techniques, the production featured voice performances from Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, and Mackenzie Foy. After
